This is one of the first questions I get from almost every new color client who walks into Moxi Hair Studio: "Should I get balayage or highlights?"
It's a great question because both techniques add dimension and brightness, but they create very different results. And the right choice depends less on what's trending and more on how you live your life, what your hair can handle, and what kind of maintenance fits your schedule.
Let me walk you through the differences so you can come into your consultation with a clear picture of what you want.
Highlights use foils to lift precise, consistent sections of hair. The result is an even pattern of lighter strands from root to tip. I can make them subtle (just a few face-framing pieces) or dramatic (a full head of foils for maximum brightness).
Highlights have been around for decades, and there's a reason they're still one of the most requested services in McKinney. They're predictable, they're versatile, and when done well, they look polished and put-together.
Highlights tend to work best if you want a uniform, all-over brightness, prefer a more polished and classic look, or don't mind coming in every 6 to 8 weeks for a touch-up.
Balayage is a freehand painting technique. Instead of placing hair into foils, I paint the color directly onto the surface of the hair, concentrating it on the mid-lengths and ends. The result is a softer, more graduated transition between your natural color and the lighter pieces.
The word "balayage" comes from French and literally means "to sweep." That sweeping motion is what gives it that sun-kissed, lived-in look that so many women love.
Balayage tends to work best if you want something low-maintenance that grows out gracefully, prefer a natural and effortless look over something polished, or want to stretch your salon visits to every 10 to 14 weeks. Learn more about our balayage and foilayage services.
How they look. Highlights give you consistent brightness throughout. Balayage gives you a more natural gradient, lighter at the ends and softer at the roots. Both are beautiful. The question is which aesthetic fits your personal style.
How they grow out. This is where the real difference shows up in your life. Highlights create a visible line of regrowth as your roots come in. Balayage blends seamlessly as it grows, which means less urgency to get back in the chair.
How they're maintained. Highlights typically need a refresh every 6 to 8 weeks. Balayage can go 10 to 14 weeks between appointments. For busy women in McKinney who are juggling work, kids, and everything else, that extra time between visits can make a real difference.
How they affect your hair. Both involve lightening, but balayage tends to be gentler overall because I'm not lifting from the root. I also use Olaplex during color services to protect the bond structure of your hair, so regardless of which technique we choose, your hair stays healthy.
In McKinney, you'll find that balayage and highlights are priced similarly per appointment. But because balayage stretches longer between visits, it often works out to be more budget-friendly over the course of a year.
At Moxi Hair Studio, I always talk through pricing during your consultation so there are no surprises. Transparency matters to me. You should know exactly what you're investing in before we start.
Here's what I tell every client who asks me this question: don't decide based on what your friend got or what you saw on Instagram. Decide based on your hair, your lifestyle, and your goals.
That's exactly what your consultation is for. I'll look at your natural color, your hair's condition, your texture, and we'll talk about how much time you realistically want to spend on maintenance. Then I'll give you my honest recommendation.
Sometimes the answer is highlights. Sometimes it's balayage. Sometimes it's a combination of both. The point is that it's customized to you, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Book a complimentary consultation and let's look at your hair together. I'll give you a clear recommendation, walk you through the process, and make sure you leave feeling excited about the plan. No pressure, just expert guidance from someone who has been doing this for over 30 years.
